Extra, Extra! Leggy Legumes Boast Bean!

Well folks, in case any of you were wondering what happens when you plant beans indoors in March, speculate no longer.  You get leggy plants and beans in May.

Yes, I have reaped my first harvest.  I no longer am running the danger of fruitless labor.  I have picked....one bean.

The legume in question was harvested on the twenty-first of May, two thousand ten.  It is a Blue Lake Bush bean.  Basically what happened was that I was putting my bean cups into a basket to move them, saw the bean, exclaimed "holy crap!", touched the bean, and it fell off.  On closer inspection it was found that there were more beans developing.  Aren't the miniature beans just precious.

Beans are self-pollinators; the stamens actually brush past the pistol in the process of the bloom opening so if there is a flower there will be a bean, more or less.  Which is handy because 1) I don't have to worry about cross pollination and 2) no extra work.

Other than that, I planted some over the weekend.  I got out some garlic (I know it's late), few kinds of corn, more peppers, eggplant, and some gladiolus.  It's been extremely windy out lately so I've been putting off planting until the wind dies down.  No need to shock the plants further by subjecting them to gale force winds right after transplant.  Oh, that and the fact that I am scheduled to work every day that the weather is conducive to planting.  C'est la vie.
